Stop School Slaughter

At schools all over the United States, clubs like the Future Farmers of America (FFA), 4-H, and others provide students who are interested in entering the agriculture industry with a chance to get “hands-on” experience. Unfortunately, this means that in many instances, students are made to raise cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals, then sell them to slaughterhouses or, on occasion, even kill animals right on campus.

Besides the fact that raising and killing animals for food is just plain cruel, these types of programs send a dangerous message to the students involved. After they have raised animals and developed bonds with them—often even giving them names—students then have to kill the animals they've come to know like a friend. The only lesson to be learned from such a course is that killing an animal that feels pain and emotion just like a human is OK. Many students, after finally realizing the fate of the animals they’ve raised like children, desperately try to save them.

We don’t live out on the prairie anymore—in the 21st Century there’s simply no reason for students to be learning how to kill animals. If your school has a course or club that involves raising animals to be slaughtered for food, here are some ideas about how you can stop all the killing. Whatever you do, be sure to e-mail StreetTeam@peta2.com to let us know what happens—we’d love to help in any way we can, and we’ll reward you with Street Team points for all the things you do.

Ask your school’s FFA, 4-H, or other club to spare the animals.
If you find out that an agriculture club at your school is planning on slaughtering animals, talk to students who are involved in the club, or better yet the club’s advisor, and ask if they would be willing to spare the animals. Many students have had success getting animals sent to sanctuaries to live out their lives.

Meet with your principal and ask for a school policy against raising animals for slaughter.
Set up a meeting with the principal to tell him how you feel about students raising and killing animals. Need help setting up a meeting? Try asking your teachers or school guidance counsellors for assistance.

If that sounds like too much work, just write a letter asking the principal to set a policy against raising animals for slaughter, and drop it in his or her mailbox.

Start a petition!
Download and print our petition, then gather signatures from fellow students and other people in your town. Once you’ve filled up a few pages with signatures, present all of the petitions to your school’s administrators to show support for your campaign.

Also, mail copies of the completed petitions to the address below and we'll reward you with an additional 50 Street Team points for each e-mail address that you get.

Show “Meet Your Meat” at school.
More than 27 billion animals are killed for food each year in the United States alone. Show your fellow students what life is really like for the cows, pigs, and chickens killed for food. Ask your teachers if you can show “Meet Your Meat” during your classes, or, get permission to set-up a table with a TV playing the video during lunch. You can download “Meet Your Meat” here. If you’d like to order the video on DVD or VHS, just e-mail peta2@peta2.com with your full mailing address and we’ll be glad to send you a copy.

Ask your parents to get involved.
Many times school officials will be more likely to listen to your case if they hear from concerned parents. Ask your parents and your friends’ parents to write and call the principal asking him to stop allowing students to raise animals for slaughter. If the principal is not willing to listen, ask your parents to take the issue up with the school board.
